On July 28, 2021, Chinese Ambassador Ma Xinmin met with Health Minister of the Sudanese transitional government Omar to exchange opinions on joint efforts against COVID-19 and health cooperation.

China and Sudan are strategic partners that enjoy long-lasting friendship and always give each other understanding and support, and bilateral relations have been advancing in a steady and sound manner, Ma said, adding that this year marks the 50th anniversary of our health cooperation. It has been a model and flagship of practical cooperation between the two sides, underpinned by three initiatives including dispatching a medical assistance team to Sudan, conducting medical cooperation and assisting with COVID-19 response. At the height of Sudan’s epidemic situation, China shipped medical supplies in batches to Sudan, sent a medical expert group to help it contain the virus, and in March this year, offered the first batch of vaccine aid to the country. Despite the current tremendous demand for vaccines at home, the Chinese government overcame difficulties and has decided to offer Sudan a second batch of vaccine and mask assistance to support its fight against COVID-19. These concrete actions attest to the bond of friendship between China and Sudan that always get through crisis together. Next, China stands ready to scale up its cooperation with Sudan on COVID-19 response and in the medical area, and to respond to international public health challenges under the framework of the World Health Organization with Sudan in unity. This will push our medical cooperation to a new stage.

For his part, Omar commended the long-term friendship between Sudan and China that is stronger than ever, and noted the fruitful achievements of bilateral cooperation in various domains, saying that Sudan highly appreciates the medical cooperation with China and sincerely thanks the Chinese government for its long-term and valuable support for Sudan’s health cause by sending a medical assistance team to Sudan on a long-term basis. After COVID-19 raged through Sudan, China extended a helping hand to Sudan by providing anti-epidemic supplies, sending a medical expert team and offering vaccine aid. All this has played an instrumental role in local epidemic prevention and control and the restoration of local production and life. Noting that China will provide further vaccine and mask assistance to Sudan, regardless of its limited vaccine production capacity and domestic huge demand for vaccines, Omar said, Sudan is deeply grateful to China for its assistance, adding that this speaks volumes for the profound friendship between the two nations like brothers. He pointed out that on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Sudan-China medical cooperation, Sudan will meet China halfway, further enrich medical cooperation between the two sides, and seek multilateral cooperation under the framework of the WHO, saying that this will enable Sudan-China medical cooperation to achieve greater results.
